So McDonald's comes out with this new trio of "gourmet" burgers that they dub "Angus 1/3 Pounders." First of all, who the hell is Angus? Does anybody really know what angus beef means or how it's supposed to taste different than regular beef? I sure as hell don't.Next thing - "Third Pounder" just doesn't roll off the tongue like "Quarter Pounder." It was a feeble and failed attempt to piggy back on one of their branding classics.
They come in "Deluxe," "Bacon & Cheddar," and "Mushroom & Swiss." I went with the "Deluxe" which happens to be the only one with lettuce - it also adds tomato, onion, cheese, pickles, mayo and mustard. I promptly removed the pickles (which you should always do from any McD's burger) and then added some ketchup. The lettuce and onions were nice - they were big, whole pieces as opposed to the usual shredded, chopped stuff. The thick, whole tomato slices were a nice touch as well and of course the burger patty was nice and thick. And they advertise them on a "bakery-style" roll, which really just looks like their regular "sesame-seed bun" with pleats in the top of it.
So they do all this "fancying-up" to the thing, and you have a bite and then here's the thing... it's still McDonald's. It's just not that good. The one thing McDonald's accomplishes with these things is they magnify the fact that their burgers are kind of gross. And they're really salty! The thin burgers on their other sandwiches get masked a bit by the rest of the stuff, but when they go and make super-thick salt burgers, they're shattering their own mirage and exposing their "grossness" to the consumer. Badly misplayed, Ronald... badly misplayed.
